Bijli Mahadev:- Tourist place, Historical and sacred place in kullu District

On 11th june 2021, a lightning has stroked on the hilltop of Bijli Mahadev. Video of lightning striking getting viral nowadays.

Bijli Mahadev is one of the ancient temples in India and dedicated to Lord Shiva (Mahadev). It is located at an altitude of about 2,460mtr. and 20 kms from Kullu across the Beas river via zigzag road. Beas river and Bhunter airport are clearly visible and provides a great look/scenario from there.

History:- Story behind Bijli Mahadev Temple:-

According to the mythology, there was a giant valley, that was in the form of a snake, which was killed by Mahadev. It is said that in every 12 years, Lord Indra drops lightning with the permission of Bholenath. The Shivalinga of the temple gets ruined due to lightning. After that, the worshipers of the temple apply butter on the broken Shivling as an ointment, so that Mahadev gets relief from that pain.
There is an another story that there was a demon named Kulant used to live in that valley. Once he stopped the water of river Beas to kill all the living beings. Seeing that, Mahadev got angry and created an illusion. Lord Shiva went to the demon and told him that his tail was on fire. Hearing the words of Mahadev, as soon as the demon looked back, Lord Shiva hit Kulant on the head with His Trishul and he died there. It is said that the giant body of the demon turned into a mountain, which we call the mountain of Kullu.
According to the legends, Lord Shiva, after killing  Kulant, asked Lord Indra to drop lightning there every 12 years. Lord Shiva told that there would be no loss of public and wealth. The Lord himself protects his devotees by tolerating electric shocks.
Best season to visit there:- This Place is reachable throughout the year but the best season in my opinion to visit there is between September to April (Except Dec and January) as it involves trekking and during that time, weather remains neither hot nor that much cold.

Incomparable view of  Bhunter Airport, Beas River and Bhunter town from there:-

Distance from Kullu to Bijli Mahadev Temple:
It is approximately 20 kms. from Kullu to reach there. It is located on the top of Mathan hills of Kullu District.

Way to go there:- This place is reachable through road and after road, you will have to perform a 3 km moderately difficult trek uphill to reach that temple. It is an easy trek overall. Here is a route of the trek of Bijli Mahadev.👇
